I prefer at least one sitting. Yet, if you wish, I will paint it from your favorite photo, provided it's clear, and well defined. I even take portrait commissions from black and white photos, and "translate" the tonal values into color. Prices start at $400., plus shipping, on an 18"X24" stretched canvas. For an appointment at my Fox Island, WA, studio/gallery, phone, 1 253 549 7700.
For instance, this portrait was painted from a black and white, 110 year old, hand tinted photo. The tinting was of no use at al, and I had to use a magnifying glass to read what seemed to be very corroded letters on the hat.
"CS," probably starts with "R," for "REVENUE CUTTER SERVICE".( I googled it) The next set of letters looks like "UFA," but would make more sense if it were "USL," for "UNITED STATES LIFE," which proceeds the last set, "SAVING SERVICE" (The viewer can't see the last E)
In 1915, the two above services, plus the Light House Service, became the US Coast Guard.
Grandpa died when I was 7 years old. All I knew about him is that he was very kind, often quoted various philosophers, and he loved to star gaze. He spent hours pointing out various constellations, which I still remember.
Yet, my cousins and I know that our Grandpa received a pension for duty during the Spanish American war. Since Grandpa did so many dramatic paintings of cutter ships, sails full, from memory, I strongly suspect he also sailed them.
My cousin, Wayne Peterson, has seen Grandpa's Spanish American war medals, which now seem to be missing. Too bad, because I would have enjoyed painting them onto his pea coat.

I'm sending the metal print of our Norwegian Grandpa for his great-grand daughter, who now lives in Norway, and is marrying a Norwegian man. A special heirloom for the family. How I love your portraits, Charlie!

Charles, Your work is great. Love this picture of Grandpa. Very excited that now I will be adding to my house a beautiful portrait of Grandpa Peterson. You show great honor to this hero who saved so many lives.
Charles Munn replied:
Thank you so much, Marilyn! Our cousin, Wayne Peterson, said he's seen Grandpa's Spanish America medals, but he doesn't know what happened to them. Too bad, because I would have painted them pinned to his P Jacket.

To see the transformation of Grandpa from old photo to painting is like an introduction. Now I finally see him as he was, in color, with the depth of expression and sensitivity of his being. It is truly miraculous, Charles, how you brought life with your brush strokes, to show us Grandpa Peterson, in the prime of his youth,.... twas so long ago,,, but how beloved he is!
Charles Munn replied:
BTW, Mary Jane, I may be the only living family member who actually knew Grandpa Peterson and watched him paint sailing ships from memory.
